Didn’t see everything, but here is a snapshot of my thoughts on Oshkosh in random order:
Cirrus - Vision jet on display. Gorgeous aircraft. Told sales rep I was a student pilot, he wanted me to climb in an SR20. I politely declined. The annual repack set aside for the chute on that aircraft is $1,000 a year. Yikes!
Icon - One icon display was folded up on a trailer being towed by a Range Rover, another one they had roped off and they demonstrated folding the wings. Couldn’t sit in the icon, which I didn’t like. I still love the look of the Icon, but until they actually deliver, I’m not holding my breath!
Tecnam - All planes are represented. Nice display. I really think the 2006T is a cool plane. Twin Rotax burning 10 gph! Astore (twin to Mack's) looked great with a brown leather interior. The P2010 looks like a grown up 2008. You can stand straight up under thew wing. But it’s almost twice the price of the P2008. That’s a lot of money for two seats and 20 knots. P92 was the yellow one. Nice plane, but for just a little more you can get a P2008. But I may be a little biased. The P2008 was the Premium Edition demo. What can I say about this aircraft? Wife and I sat in the P2008, and she loved it. Very comfortable and spacious she said!
Other LSA -
Low end Jabiru, I think that’s a sweet trainer. 2 seater, $99k new with glass panel.
Sling - Looked at the 4 seater (not LSA), and was impressed that the 914 powers that plane!
Bristell - Didn’t see
Vans - Didn’t see
Glasair Merlin - This looked like what the Skycatcher should have been. Refined interior, good looking. But again, not anything I would buy
Didn’t see many LSA, as the show is so huge you can’t find everybody.
Forums - They have educational forums on every subject matter. They run continuously in 9 forum buildings. Each one runs about an hour to an hour and a half. It was crazy how much stuff there was to see. Next time we go we are setting aside more time for this as we couldn’t get to anywhere near enough of these that we wanted to. We saw one about a woman who did not start to fly until age 50, and hated her first flight. Now she has over 500 hours. We also saw forums on the Bahamas, Garmin G3X and angle of attack indicators. Some manufacturers have their own tents where they put on seminars.
MZeroA - Got to meet Ariel Tweto and get our picture taken. Very sweet young lady. Also got to meet Jason..
Foreflight- Holy cow what a map update! Continuously zoom from globe level down to the airport plate. Crazy smooth. More web features coming as well, including filing a flight plan.
HondaJet - What a gorgeous aircraft. I asked the guy, and he said 4.9 million. I said thanks for the information and moved on.
Air show - I’m not really an airshow guy, but there was a fantastic show each day. My wife liked it more than I did, which shocked me a little bit. She’s never been into air shows. She was impressed by the fighter jets and choreographed Canadian Snowbirds.
Dinner - One of the highlights. Me, jet cat, his Dad Steve, Mark from Tecnam, and my wife and I ate Chinese buffet and talked for two hours all things aviation. What a great time!
Food at the show- Standard fairgrounds type food. I would say this is an area for improvement.
Restrooms - They had enclosed trailers on wheels with full working bathrooms in them, (with sinks and running water) so we never had to use the dreaded port a potty. Although they did have plenty of those as well on grounds.
Seaplane base - Took the bus to a small cove where all the float planes were moored. Gorgeous spot on the lake. Much more quiet than the rest of the show.
Overall - The show was way better than even I expected. Just non stop things to do and see. We will definitely go back next year. Although there were tons of people there, the grounds are so huge that it never felt too crowded.
If I think of anything else, I’ll follow up with another post. I'll also post some pictures.
