Winter's on its way here in Montana, so my mechanic is dealing with keeping the oil temps up. We understand that the only way to deal with it is to tape part of the radiator. My mechanic called this morning with a question. He asked me what my egt is reading. I told him that I don't have egt on the Garmin G3X. He then checked and found that there are no egt probes installed. Does anybody (everybody?) have the egt operative in their airplanes?
Thanks, Marshall Friedman

Thanks for that. It might have helped had I noted that mine is a 914.

Here's what my engine page looks like. No EGT, and a single cylinder head temp gauge. I have not gone to the engine setup page to see if I can get more sensors on screen, but I would be surprised if I could. It's for a 914.

I have a 914 and Dynon screens. I only have a single CHT indication. I have been under the impression that this is the only temp sensor that is associated with the 914.

It seems that EGT probes are only present on the 912_IS engine. Don't know why if that is true.

The people at Lockwood have told me that having EGT operative on a 914 is not mandatory.

Anyone put a thermostat on the oil line to keep the temps up?

At the suggestion of one of the other forum members, I'm taping the radiator. I'm keeping track of OAT and the amount of taping needed to keep the temperature above 212 degrees. My first try was at 51 degrees OAT. We taped about an inch and a half. It raised the oil temp from 208 to 220. Temps are going to start dropping fairly quickly over the next month here in Montana, so I'll be doing a lot of experimenting. I'll end up (again, at the suggestion of one of the other members) with a chart showing OAT and how much of the radiator to tape, and I'll post that. I'm also going to install a Tanis. I'm in a "semi-heated" hangar, but that's not going to do much when things get much below where they are now, and it takes forever to get the oil temp up after engine start. I understand that Tecnam has some kind of plate that can be attached to the radiator, but the problem with that is that it's only going to be good for one temperature range. My mechanic wants to make one himself, and he'd make 3 or 4 sizes that deal with various temperature ranges. I told him that this would be a great idea as long as I'm not paying for his "product development". If he does that, it would look a lot better and be much easier than taking tape off and putting it back on as temps change. I'll let everybody know if he follows up with that.

I have no clue what the radiator/oil cooler size or set up is on an Astore, but my mechanic made an ingenious sliding shutter system for my 912 CTLS. It works great and you adjust it in flight with a choke cable. I will get pics with a tape measure showing the size. He will make a bunch of them if folks are interested? i left it on all the way through spring, and finally took it off in June. No overheating problems on 70 degree days

Thanks for that, Scrapman. I don't know if it would work on a 914, but other members of the forum might. If it does, I'd really like to see those photos.

Adjusting in flight would be great. Thanks for the input.
