I've been looking at Gyros for a couple years but finally went for a ride and that sealed the deal. The maneuverability of these things is just amazing. We hit full rudder while flying and it just spins around and does a 180 over a spot. Crazy fun.

Well after taking a ride in one of these I am hooked and put a deposit down. Nice! What make & model? I decided to go with the American Ranger AR-1. They are built in Zephyrhills so fairly close for me. I toured the factory and the quality is outstanding. I opted for the Rotax 914 which is the same as in my P2008. I'll start type training in a month or so. The build won't start until July or August and takes just a couple weeks.

Well after taking a ride in one of these I am hooked and put a deposit down. What a blast to fly. Hopefully it will fit in the t-hangar with the P2008. I gotta know more. How much, generally, do these things cost? What license / rating do you need to fly one? How are they certificated? It seems like such an exotic thing, but I'm sure it's not so different once you open your mind to it.

Hi Grant. I think you can get into one of these for the low 80s. I added some features like the 914, carbon fiber, and some enhanced avionics so with the show discount I was just under $100K. As far as ratings go I plan on a full Gyroplane rating. The trick is finding a Gyro CFI. I'm told that most can complete the training and solo in 20 to 30 hours. Then a proficiency check and you're done. There's also an option to get a sport pilot gyro endorsement. They can be certificated as EAB or ELSA. There are hundreds of these modern design Gyros flying mostly in Europe but quite a few here too. Growing numbers every year.

It looks like more fun that should be legal. Congrats, and give us a full PIREP once you're up and running!

Yes the 914. It seems most of the AR-1s under construction and in the hangar have the 914.
