I have some posts that are about two years old on this issue. Bad floats—Rotax changed the float bowl shape. It took a rebuild to fix my issue.

Everyone:
Thanks again for your ideas. At the moment, I have a resolution. Unsatisfying one, but still.
After all the feedback, I drained and cleaned the gascolator. No debris in the cup or screen. I also tapped on the outside of the carburetor float housing at the suggestion of my mechanic in the event that it might unstick floats. (With the 914, removing the floats is a little more of a hassle than on the other Rotax engines, so this was a pitiful but easy alternative).
On restarting the engine, everything ran great. I did an extended high RPM (+4000) runup also with no issues. So, I flew a few patterns. Perfect. Since then, I have put 2 hours on the engine and not observed any anomalies. It's always a concern when things mysteriously go wrong and then mysteriously fix themselves without leaving you to understand what happened. For the moment, though, I'll take it.
