Just wondering if you have done a 5 year rubber replacement on a 914? My mechanic has been working on mine for 50 days. How long did yours take? I am a bit cranky right now.

What is the rubber replacement? Is it a 5 year requirement?

This is what the 912 MM says. I'm sure the 914 MM says something similar. Attachments:

Yes the line maintenance manual for 914 is similar. It says every 5 years you MUST replace the specified rubber parts. My understanding is if your Rotax is an SLSA install you are required to follow the maintenance requirements of the engine manufacture. ELSA is more lenient. So as far as I know the Rotax line maintenance manual says MUST so it is required. I even got a reminder from Tecnam US a few days ago.

It looks like I will be close enough to 500 hours to have to do the gearbox inspection as well.

It looks like I will be close enough to 500 hours to have to do the gearbox inspection as well. It's all relative: When I owned Cirruses, my annuals were always at least $7k--and sometimes 10 or more. Some of these Tecnam requirements are annoying, but they could be a whole lot worse!

Just wondering if you have done a 5 year rubber replacement on a 914? My mechanic has been working on mine for 50 days.
That seems excessive. Were there any other issues found? With all of the necessary parts in hand, I see no reason why the rubber replacement should take more than a few days.

What is the rubber replacement? Is it a 5 year requirement? Yes. Same for the 912iS as well.

That seems excessive. Were there any other issues found? With all of the necessary parts in hand, I see no reason why the rubber replacement should take more than a few days. This time frame included my conditional. Which last year took less than a day. (no issues found on inspection) And the carb cir-clip required maintenance. We knew at last years inspection that we would have the rubber replacement done. My mechanic came to my hanger three months before to get an idea about the length of hoses needed. I made a couple of inquires leading up to the work asking why I hadn't been asked for the money to order the parts. I got various reasons. Throughout the 50 plus days so far, I was to understand that things were just about done several times, the last being yesterday. Just need to flush the coolant system fill the oil and balance the carbs. I thought I would get it today...nope. The excuse that I have heard though the process has been blaming the supply chain because of Covid or whatever. So now the earliest I will get it would be Monday and that will be 55 days. I am livid.

Well I got my plane back from the shop. I spent a day cleaning it up as it was dirty. I advised the shop that I would do the post work cleaning as I am picky about how things are done. And more importantly it makes me look very closely for hanger rash and other things that might be amiss after work being done. No rash but I did ID some concerns after the rubber/hose replacement. My son who is an A&P also helped with the inspection. Unfortunately he is not currently rotax trained. We identified a handful of nit picky items associated with wires/tubes/hoses rubbing and chaffing. Maybe from after the work or maybe they were like that from factory not sure. We did also find three items that were airworthiness issues. 1. The first section of fuel line that attaches to the fuel pumps out going to carbs was missing a clamp. I think that you can all understand the potential impact of that omission. Its hard to understand how it was missed because its on top and out in the open to be easily seen. 2. Failed to screw down the nut that keeps the out going oil pickup tube in the oil sump can. Guess that's why I found oil sprayed over the firewall. 3. Outgoing coolant hose from coolant expansion chamber on top of the 914 was 75% kinked off where it makes the 90 degree bend and goes down below engine to go to the radiator and in cabin heater. Still working to figure this out. It looks like a straight piece of hose was used where maybe it was supposed to be a hose formed in a 90 degree bend. Another one that is hard to understand. Currently working with Josh Tecnam US to get correct part number for hose and see what that tells us. Any one of these problems could have put me in the trees. So word to the wise, look very closely at all the work that gets done on your plane. Several years back I watched a C-182 go down on first flight after work. That memory left a big impression on me. Sitting now at 58 days without my plane. At this rate I wont be flying until September. One more word for the wise. When you are doing planned maintenance like this do not let the mechanic start tearing things apart until all the parts have arrived. Very frustrating. Ok I fell better now.

Sorry about the hassle Buzz. I'm betting you go mechanic-shopping in the near future. My rubber is due next year and I'm considering flying to Lockwood to do it since Josh and team are right next door.

I just got off the phone with Lockwood. (My 5-year RR is also due next year) I asked if there was a kit and she said no. They are sending me the parts list for the 5-year rubber replacement. She did say there were a few model specific items we would need to get from Tecnam. I'll post my findings (& pricing) here.

My five year will be in November. My tech is Rotax certified but I have not gotten a straight yes or no from here about comfort level with the rubber replacement. These posts have been great. Thank you for all the great info.
