Stemming off of the "Smart Glide" discussion under Avionics regarding Garmin's latest software update...
I went up this morning and tested out sink rate at Vg. At 5,000' with engine at idle, flaps up, and the autopilot set to hold 65 kts, I was averaging 650' per min in sink rate. I wasn't at gross weight and the density altitude was non-existent. I think 700' entered into the config settings would probably be a safe bet.
Let me know if anyone experiences something different.
PS - I'm holding off on the software update until after the weekend. We're planning on flying out of town and I don't want any surprises in route. I'll fully test Smart Glide and report back sometime next week.

I'll fully test Smart Glide and report back sometime next week. Someone beat me to it. Check out his video here: Garmin Smart Glide Demo
Just press and hold the "Direct to" to activate SG.

Downloaded 8.91 today when I got back from Hilton Head. Once installed, you'll need to open configuration mode. (Hold menu while powering up the panel). From there, select "Aircraft" then the "Reference Speeds" tab. VG and Sink Rate at VG are near the bottom. You'll have to scroll to see them. My data was already entered (perhaps at installation?) VG was set at 65 and sink rate was set at 700.
The way to access Smart Glide is to press and hold the Direct To button, or just hit Menu twice. You'll then see Emergency in the upper left corner of the menu. Obviously SG won't work on the ground, so you'll have to take it up to test it out. I'll report back the results of my test later this week.

My plane already had a glide ratio entered in the configuration settings. (9.35:1). Does anyone know if that setting is correct? I have a P2008 / 914 turbo.

From Section 5.1.2 of my POH: Engine Out Glide: "Glide ratio is 12.8 therefore with 1000 ft of altitude, it is possible to cover ~2 nautical miles in zero wind conditions." * This is on a 912iS P2008.

Wow, Flocker: Way to quote the POH. I had looked and didn’t see that note. It’s the same on my POH, so thank you. I wonder if I ought to sandbag that number just a bit in case our Italian friends didn’t carry the 1, divide by Pi and convert from metric correctly. I’ll update the next time I go to the hangar, but I might stick a 12.0 in there.
