Recommendations for my P2008/914?
Before I bought N343X in March 2021, seller Mark Gregor used Bruce Sauer of Wells Aviation (Wells MN) to give N343X a fresh annual. Sauer is terrific, but I'd prefer not to fly N343X from CA to MN for an annual.

Hi Fomer, Cirrus Guy,
I don’t blame you! I made the trip from Las Vegas to Mankato it’s a long Flt as you know! So your annual is around the corner. Have you looked around Ca for any qualified shops ? And make sure they are familiar with SLSA or Rotax most shops are not.
Have you thought about getting your maintenance Ticket through Rainbow Aviation ? I am going next month. For the same reason I can’t find qualified A&P’s that understand SLAS very frustrating I have actually have had a couple do more harm than good. ….
Let me know what you find and plan to do……
Ray & Lucy 🇺🇸👍🏻😊😀✅✈️

Sauer is terrific, but I'd prefer not to fly N343X from CA to MN for an annual. The Rotax engine is the biggest difference and the problem with using a regular A&P. There are too many differences compared to Lycoming and Continental engines. Between now and March 2023, you could get your Rotax certification. Then find an A&P that welcomes owner participation during the Annual Condition Inspection and then teach him about the Rotax. That's one option. But for this year just keep looking. There are LSA-Rotax qualified shops closer than Minnesota. Maybe you could even be the first customer for cole505. Roger Lee in Tucson is about 650 miles from you. He's very knowledgeable. www.rotax-owner.com/en/classifieds/browse-classifieds/advert/309-rotax-mechanics

I find it surprising that there aren't more resources in the Bay Area. Here in the DC area I am told that there is a "Tecnam Authorized Service Center" -- if there indeed is such a thing -- in the Annapolis area, close by. I've phoned that shop and spoken to the mechanic and indeed they do a lot of Rotax work and are familiar with the Tecnam a/c. Also Bristell is HQ'd up the road in Lancaster PA and I know they have a very experienced Rotax shop. Finally the repair shop on my field recently sent a mechanic to Rotax school as there are a number of Rotax powered planes on the field. So even before my plane has arrived I know I have some options. If I were in your shoes, in addition to this forum and the Flight Design form (ctfliers) I'd maybe check out/post on the Rotax forum and also phone Lockwood in Florida as they may be able to steer you toward someone close by.

I haven't found anywhere that has a complete list of light sport maintenance centers and/or Rotax certified techs. Even Rotax Flying club leaves many out. Here in Denton, Texas there is CFDI Aero that lists on their website that they are "Factory Authorized Service for major Light Sport Aircraft" and that they offer all services for Flight Design,Tecnam,Evektor, Remos, AeroTrek,Jabiru, Allegro, and Indus. But I know that because the airpark where I live is only 7 miles away. The Light Sport Plane Industry needs to get it's act together.
It's very hard to find information so joining all the different forums (like this one) seems to be the best way to get information. It shouldn't be that difficult!

When you graduate iRMT training, they give you the option to be put on the map above. I opted not to, but some people do.

Maybe we should start a persistent thread for people to post MX resources and contact info. I'd love to have a national resource for that. It's hard enough looking for an annual vendor. What about if / when you have a service issue on the road?

That's a good idea. The Cirrus Owners' Assn magazine has a list of every Cirrus Authorized Service Center. I always kept the most recent list in my flight bag, just in case I needed service on the road.

Yes I opted out of being listed after training at Lockwood also but I'm not in the business. However I've found more than a few Rotax certified techs that do it for a living and they aren't listed. If I know their name, a search will find them and that's helpful because it confirms their currency but doesn't help for a blind search.
Funny Story: Our P2008 is actually my wife's plane so we both attended Lockwood's training and as I said I opted out of being listed but for some reason my wife decided to opted in and she became listed as an Independent Rotax Technician with phone number and address. So now she's pretty handy at synching carbs and doing oil changes, even helps on my Bonanza when I ask. But a few months after training, my wife answered the door one morning and was shocked when the man said to her "Hey, my name is Dale. I just saw your picture on the Rotax site and I need my engine worked on. How long have you been working on Light Sports?" We had a good laugh and a cup of coffee with Dale and talked airplanes for the rest of the morning. We still occasionally get phone calls looking for a Rotax mechanic.

Moved this thread to the Maintenance Forum. Seemed more appropriate given the direction it's heading.
