Before I call TAF in CA on Monday, 6.20 will be my first update, since taking delivery of my Sling. I’ve got dual G3X’s, do I do one at a time, left then right or can I do both at the same time with 2 SD cards?

Never tried doing both at the same time but it only takes an extra couple minutes to do sequentially. Software update is very fast.

Tony, I’ve not learned (or attempted) any of the approach capabilities that are possible with the GTN. I do intend to get instrument instruction and learn how to use it even though I can’t get the official upcheck as a sport rating.

Yesterday I updated my G3X-Touch software from 5.9 to 6.2. Then I went for a test flight. My traffic screen reported "No Data." Plus my iPad/ForeFlight would not make the bluetooth connection to the Garmin GDL-39 for traffic. Perhaps the download was corrupted. I use an MacBook Pro. But I've had many successful upgrades in the past, both software and NavData. Anyone have similar issues? I'll be talking to Garmin G3X Tech Support tomorrow.

John, I flew with 6.20 yesterday and both iPad connection and traffic were working for me.

Thanks Tony. I've been tempted many times to put a bullet through my Apple computer. Once I get things straight with Tech Support, I'll post my findings.

John, not that it may help, but I make sure I do a complete format of the SD card before loading any new Garmin updates. The only time I had issues was when I didn't format the card.

Did both a GTN-650 update, a G3X update and the new upload. No issues with any of it. Will fly it tomorrow and see how it’s performing in flight.

Update regarding my G3X-Touch software from 5.9 to 6.2:
I contacted Garmin G3X Tech Support while sitting in my P2008. Jon had me get into the setup page on the G3X, then go to the BlueTooth section. He had me delete the listed GDL-39R so that the G3X could make a new connection after the 6.2 software upgrade. The G3X could not find via BlueTooth the GDL-39R. Jon then took me through configuration mode and we saw that even in configuration mode the GDL-39R was not being recognized by the G3X. This prompted Jon to think that the GDL-39R was not getting power. I told him I'd call him back later. I gained access to the GDL-39R, removed the 9-pin connector, and verified that power was being supplied via pins 9 and 5. I called Jon back to report the news. He told me that, in the meantime, he heard from another person that had the same problem. Jon then had to turn the problem over to engineering. While I had him on the phone I had him talk me through reloading another 6.2 software update that I downloaded from a PC (versus the earlier Apple MacBook Pro download). We went through the same procedures and still no cigar. Jon told me while we were performing the upload that Garmin encourages PC usage over Apple. He said the only reason they have an Apple upload procedure is to satisfy demand. That more or less explained the general lack of Apple knowledge I'd experienced in the past with Garmin Tech Support. When it comes to Garmin, I'm now a born again PC guy. A few hours later Jon from Garmin G3X Tech Support called me back. He said that engineering was continuing to work on the problem and had not come to any conclusions. They thought that something went wrong during the upload, but didn't know what. As I'm hearing this, I'm thinking about that bullet going through my MacBook Pro. Jon felt that regardless of what engineering concluded, a replacement GDL-39R would be necessary. He mailed me one under warranty. I should receive it in two days. I doubt I'll have any problems, especially since the G3X now has a 6.2 update from my PC. If anything out of the ordinary happens, I'll update this report.

Hi John, While you wait for the replacement GDL39R, have you thought about installing 5.9 again? If you did that and it recognized and connected to your GDL39R then Garmin would know to fix 6.2. I keep copies of all downloaded updates just for this purpose. Glenn P.S Except for my iPad, I'm a PC user.

Hi Glenn, I was wishing I had saved a copy of 5.9. Is that version still available on Garmin's site? I'll do it if I can get a copy. Thanks, John
