Has anyone in our forum received the LSA Repairman Maintenance Rating from the FAA? This maintenance rating is a 15 day school, and allows one to do their own Annuals, any interim plane and engine inspections necessary, as well as light airframe and engine repairs. With this certificate, and individual can also perform these inspections and repairs for others.
I have been thinking seriously about getting this rating. There are only 2 schools that I am aware of. One is at Lockwood Aviation in Sebring, FL, and the other at Rainbow Aviation Services in Corning California. The school is a total of 15 days (120 hours) and consists of 3 core modules, plus an elective module, which in our case is 'Airplane Class'. Additional elective modules can be added for WeightShift, PoweredChute, LighterThanAir, and Glider.
Module 1 (16 hours) Regulatory
Module 2 (35 hours) Airframe
Module 3 (45 hours) Engine
Module 4 (24 hours) Airplane class
I am primarily interested in doing my own Annuals and inspections, as well as repairs, not performing services for hire (which this rating entitles). I will likely do the school in California April 24 - May 10, 2017.
Does anyone have comments on this FAA certificate? Does anyone have this certificate, and if so, what do you think about it (as you had to pay for it and it is not cheap)
There is also a 2 day (16 hour) "Inspection certificate", which ONLY applies to experimental Light Sport. It cannot be applied to SLSA.
There is also a 16 hour Independent Rotax Maintenance Technician (IRMT) course. The IRMT is not part of this FAA Maintenance Rating from the FAA, but what is learned in the IRMT is included in the 15 day course mentioned above and you can do those covered repairs on your ROTAX.
FYI I am attaching the descriptions of these courses and the certificates:
