Tad Olmsted just completed my annual and after the Matco axle inspection he found and fixed the main gear axle in the picture below. Completely sheared off. Get yours checked if you have Matcos.

Any shimmy or vibrations issues noted before the inspection?

I have Matcos and it looks like mine that we discovered broken last year during annual. I had to replace 2 bearings also. The bearings felt very gritty. There is a chance this might have been caused by over torque. Time will tell. If it happens again I'm blaming the parts. Glenn

I suspect that axle was cracked and during the process of removing the axle nut the axle broke. Because of the nylon locking ring, takes a lot of torque to remove/install the axle nut.

Any shimmy or vibrations issues noted before the inspection? There was no shimmy or any indication. Apparently the main cause is over torquing.

Glenn I wish there was an easier way to monitor the axles short of removing them to inspect. A hard landing might have been very interesting.
