Finally, thanks to Mark Gregor and Pat McKinzie, I had my first flight in a 2008 today! One hour, three landings in very blustery crosswinds.
My first impressions (I have >900 hours in the SR22 + another 1000 hours in various singles and multis): Very flyable, excellent control harmonization. Very good control on all axis at high Alpha/Low Airspeed, even in some gusty crosswinds. Stall is a real non-event; you'd have to be unconscious to miss the buffet. Climb rate is good and the 914T engine shows good power in turbo. Once out of ground-friction turbulence, it was remarkably stable in level flight. The G3X took some getting used to, but as I fly with the GTN650, it was mainly trying to find analogs to what I was used to. I really liked the AOA on the PFD (More prefer them on the glare shield, But That's Just Me) Lateral visibility could be better, I like more windows. Forward visibility was very good. Ingress was easy. A shorter person could use a small stair-step to mae getting in and out a little better. I prefer 4-point restrains and would definitely install AMSAFE airbags. The odd-to-me abrupt engine stoppage when you shut them down seems a bit weird, but I know so little about Rotes engines that I can really comment except to note it's significantly different from the other horizontally-opposed air-cooled engines I've flown.
I need more time in less windy conditions to do some more T&G's and work on some more aggressive AOB turns, maneuvers, etc.
All-in-all, I'm very pleased and impressed with the model overall. This is going to take time, but so far, I think my instincts to prefer the 2008 over its low-winged siblings has been the correct one.
Oh, and BRS. Won't buy another SE Piston without it.
I give it ππππ
