About half of my recent landings have had a nose wheel shimmy from nose wheel touchdown thru the roll out. It has ranged from noticeable to severe. I have not had any hard landings or nose slams or any other events that preceded the issue. Visual inspection of the nose wheel, wheel pant, strut and caster is nominal. Anyone else with a similar problem?

Do you have tubeless tires? If not, it could be a bunched up tube. This could throw the tire out of balance. If you are tubeless, I'd start with checking the friction regulator. The normal load to be applied on the nose gear axle to steer the wheel should be 5kg. (See Section 4.6.4 of the Line Maintenance manual) This diagram is on page 50.

Hi ChiMike,
I had all the same problems, I installed a complete set of Beringer wheels, and brakes...... four years ago. Smooth sailing ever since....... Not sure what type of nose wheel assembly you have?
‘’Tecnam had me checking nose wheel torque, runway condition bearing clearance.. And my personnel favorite they suggested I replace the entire nose wheel strut assembly. At a meager cost of $7,000.00 plus labor. Mark sent me the whole Beringer wheels, tires and brakes set...... almost 400 hours later life is perfect.
Let me know
Ray & Lucy ✈️😎😊👍🏻⭐️🇺🇸✅

ChiMike - what was the verdict on this?

Two things Keep the nose wheel tire pressure between 22psi and 25psi not 32 as recommended. Don’t let the nose come down hard. One more thing, get the Barrenger nose wheel. It’s axel is far superior to the others and that’s the main reason it’s less likely to shimmy. Ed

Flocker,
Unknown. I’ve been traveling for business this week and I don’t know yet what has been done.

Latest update. Replacing the nose wheel & axle with a Beringer and Goodyear tire combo. Big thanks to Mark on the tire size issue vs the stock wheel and tire from Beringer. I’ll add some pics of the bushing when I can. That was the culprit. But my mechanic didn’t like the axle assembly and recommended a one piece. Rather than him fabbing one I’m going with the Beringer. The OEM Matco and tire is fine. So I’ll them for a back up if needed.

Decided to defer the Beringer purchase for the time being. The wheel hub bearings were bad on one side and really bad on the other. The mechanic stated that improper torque had over tightened the right side causing the bearing to fail. Replaced the bearings, balanced and reset the wheel—full runway tests no issues. Didn’t fly due to conditions. Did fly yesterday. No issues at all with pre takeoff taxi, landing, or post landing taxi. All is good for now and will look at the Beringer option in a few months unless needed sooner.
