Since I purchased my P2008 in 2018, I have been fighting a sticky wastegate. It has stuck on me a total of 3 times resulting in overboost. The latest was on my BFR with Drew (jetcat). We saw 58 inches of manifold pressure.
So again I took it to my mechanic to get it unstuck. This time I asked him to take it off and inspect it and see it we could send it off to be cleaned. This is what he found and sent to Lockwood:
I didn't want to worry about this anymore and wanted to replace it. After talking to Tecnam, Lockwood, California Power Supply, Leading Edge Airfoils and Rotec in Canada...I could not get a straight answer for the simple question 'Can I buy a new turbocharger?'.
The responses I did received were either some cocktail of fluids to apply, cooldown or inspection ritual or check with the other guy. After waiting a month on Lockwood to 'look into it', I started researching it myself. I found a 912/914 parts group on facebook and read a post listing overhauled turbos. I contacted Thomas, the owner at www.edgeperformance.no/ , and he stated that he had both overhauled and new ones. These are the dudes that add big bore, turbos and fuel injection to 912/914 to get like 165 hp.
He had the following options:
Garrett factory overhauled turbo: $2800
New turbo: $4500 (compared to CPS listed at $5800 - out of stock of course)
I bought a overhauled one and had it in 2 days via Norway:
He also said in a later email, I could send in my old one for a factory overhaul for 1500 euros.
Had it installed and it ran like a champ and I'm back in the air.
So...If you ever need a turbo...Edge Performance is the way to go.
