Hello and Happy holidays My name is Barbie and my sister and I recently inherited a P2002 Tecnam Sierra from our father. Neither of us are pilots and have limited knowledge regarding aircrafts. Would anyone have some guidance as to how to go about the sales process or perhaps interest in purchasing the aircraft. It only has 65 hours on it and seems to be in very good condition however has not been flown in about two years. Any help would be greatly appreciated Barbie

Hi Barbie,
Sorry for the loss of your Dad. I'm sure he enjoyed his time with the plane as we all do. I'd think a broker who works on commission might be your solution since its somewhat more complicated than selling an automobile. The airport manager might be helpful recommending someone in your area. Having said that, there is every reason to offer it here on the board to judge interest. You should secure the aircraft logs and keep them safely separate from the aircraft. There are 3 logs: Aircraft, Engine and Prop. These record all the maintenance records for the airplane and are essential to prove condition and value. Do not part with them and only provide copies until the sale is done. Then take a dozen good quality photos of the plane, include full frame shots of the instrument panel so viewers can see what equipment is installed. Confirm age, if hangered, the hours and the engine type. Post them to this board. You don't need to pick a sale price right away. There are two large, used plane, sites that may have listings which can give you and idea of value: Trade a Plane and Controller. I looked today and found only one listing for a 2002 with no price listed. Your value will approximate similar models from other manufactures with age, equipment and condition considerations.
Make an effort to determine a realistic price range before you accept an offer so you get fair value. Don't expect more honesty from a prospective buyer just because they have a pilots license!

I would add make sure the probate attorney has cleared the title transfer with FAA @ Wichita. Clear title is especially important in inheritance situations. Since you are a "babe in the woods" use an escrow agent (like AOPA Aircraft Title and Escrow Services to handle the transaction.
The aircraft probably has been idle for a long time and is "out of annual" (annual airworthiness check). Use the services of the home airport to locate the right mechanic to stand by to do an annual.
I bought my aircraft from such a situation and there are a lot of gotchas and questionable characters out there.
Good Luck
