Yesβif and when airports start offering it. There will be an interesting transition period. 100NL AVGAS being approved is one thing- given the age of the fleet and the temperament of GA pilots, their willing acceptance is another. Remember, these are the same folks that would βnever pull a parachute because they are βreal pilotsβ!! I think that until the fuel companies simply stop making 100LL, most legacy aircraft owners will not choose to use the unleaded option, and offer lots of excuses as to why.

In some states, like California, I expect their legislature to outlaw 100LL as quickly as they can. Theyβve held off to this point because there was no approved alternative. Now that is changed and itβs merely a matter of telling the oil companies itβs no longer legal to sell LL in their state, Viola! The FBOβs will convert. Other states may or may not follow that lead. Where it is a choice the naysayers will fly to whatever adjacent FBO has 100LL when their own FBO no longer has itβmaking those voluntary changeovers very risky for the FBO owners.
This is one instance where, for the stability of the FBOβs, states making 100NL mandatory will be in the best economic interest of the GA community and its supporting infrastructure.

At this point in time, I hope 100NL when available, is priced no more than what Iβm paying for 91 non ethanol presently. The articles Iβve rad so far, State itβs initially going to be costly, due to small batch production.

Hi Mike, I am hoping that they just stop producing 100LL / Then there wont be much of a choice. And I agree on how long it may take to get the new 100NL into the system. Look how long it took to get it approvedβ¦β¦ But, a lot of that time was R&D Anyway I am just happy one day I wonβt have to buy 100O Octane racing fuel at $10.00 a gallon and I wonβt have to transport it. Pick up my phone and let them pump it as I do on my X-country trips and no more Decalin. Ray & Lucy β

For me, adding Decalin to my tanks is no problem. What I don't like is cleaning the lead sludge from the bottom of my oil tank.

Slightly off topic, but I had thought that our engines could run on MoGas gas with ethanol. Is that wrong?

Slightly off topic, but I had thought that are engines could run on MoGas gas with ethanol. Is that wrong? They can, I want to say up to 10%, but e-free is preferred to protect the rubber parts.

Slightly off topic, but I had thought that our engines could run on MoGas gas with ethanol. Is that wrong? MoGas with no more than 10% (E10) is approved but may not a good choice. There is some debate on what ethanol might do to gaskets and o-rings but there is no debate about how ethanol attracts moisture from the atmosphere. E10 fuel will absorb up to ~0.5% its volume of water. That means that 20 gallons of fuel will absorb >12 ounces of water. That is a cup and a half of water possible. How long does it take to absorb that much water? That depends. I think most of us avoid mogas with ethanol.

Glad I asked. There's one field near Lancaster that's not far (at least it wasn't far when I had my Cirrus π) that sells Swift fuel. Otherwise I guess it's 100LL and Decalin.

Is there a minimum octane level required for MoGas use?

91. But 93 or higher is preferred. I use 93 no alcohol. It works great. Obviously on xcountry flights I only have 100LL at refuel points.
