Hi guys, I noticed in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual for my Tecnam Astore, it says the electric trim actuator is time limited to every 4 years. Does anyone know which part this is and where on the airplane it's located? And bonus points if you know how much the part costs and number of hours of labor to replace it. Many thanks!

It’s mounted in the tail. Don’t buy from Tecnam as it’s much cheaper from the manufacture. Ray Allen Co in California. You will probably have to get the model number off the unit to order.. On the P2008 rain water will get into the system and cause it to not work on auto trim. Actually if you’re not having problems I’m not sure I would do anything. Ed

Is it supposed to trim automatically when the autopilot is engaged? I have the Dynon autopilot. Every time I fly with A/P on, the Dynon prompts me to trim up or trim down and I have to do it manually. Are you saying it's supposed to do that automatically and the fact that it's not may be an indication that it's overdue to replace it? Do you know where in the tail it's mounted on the Astore so I can go looking for it and get a model number off of it?

I assume Dynon operates the same as Garmin. On my G3X system with the autopilot on auto trim is powered by pulse width modulation which is a much lower current than the full power you have with manual trim. Did your plane ever have auto trim where it didn’t prompt you to trim up or down? Flying in rain can be the kiss of death for the P2008 trim motor. I went through four trim motors before I learned to completely waterproof the system. Ed

So what you’re saying is if I replace the trim servo, there’s a chance it will auto trim from then on out and it won’t rely on me to manually trim? That would be great! Btw I found it! It was very easy to find and just 4 screws to remove the access panel. When I swap it out, I’m assuming I’ll have to calibrate it? Is that an easy process for a non engineer and non avionics expert? I remember seeing trim calibration in the Dynon settings but never did it. Do I just have to follow the prompts on the ground and no special tools or gauges needed? Also, how did you waterproof it? Mine is just sitting in there but doesn’t seem like any water has ever gotten in there: no sign of water or dirt.

Sounds like you got it sorted! Also you have Garmin right? I have Dynon. Does anyone know if the Dynon AP is supposed to auto trim? If so, I definitely want that feature. I looked in the horizontal stabilizer and I’ve got the Ray Allen T2-10A servo. Looks easy enough to swap out for a new one, but any insight on the calibration process after I put the new servo in?

I have a 2015 P2008. This is the first I’ve heard of a requirement to do a replacement at any frequency.
As to the connection with the autopilot—mine trims automatically when I have the AP engaged. Sometimes, candidly, when I am hand flying and can’t find the ‘sweet spot’—usually if there is moderate turbulence or thermals—I’ll go to autopilot just to dial it in, then go back to hand flying.
