Hi All,
I have sent numerous pictures to Mark and Tecnam, they just look and say hummmmmmmmm ....... no real solution? Mark did try, but with out Tecnam supporting him his hands are tied. I am thinking why can’t they make one just a little bit thicker, I mean these windshields are extremity. Thin! I am thinking 1/8 inch or less... When I replaced ‘’ My windshield I could not believe how extremely thin they really are. I know weight, right! a couple of mm thicker couldn’t weight that much more and could make a significant difference. I wish they would custom make one For me since I am getting ready to replace my fourth! Windshield.... I would be will to be a test bed, Heck what have I got to lose? It’s almost an annual thing. I am thinking when I do my annual I should replace my windshield Just as preventative maintenance...... sorry just extremely frustrated this problem can’t be this complicated. There is a an easy solution please don’t count on Tecnam they provide ———- 0 assistance .......

Hi All, Well my latest windshield crack, I came within seconds of declaring an inflight emergency! I was seriously considering pulling my BRS ABSOLUTELY NO WHERE TO LAND ALL MOUNTAINS! When you view the pictures you will see what I am talking about. It was half way along the pilots side of the airplane, when it cracked I could hear it over the engine roar with noise canceling head sets! My wife said OMG do you see that! There was 1/8 - 1/4 gap between the crack we were at 10500 feet ( 39 degrees and boy was the cold air coming in! ) coming back from a beautiful weekend at Sedona AZ SEZ about half way between Sedona and BVU Boulder City NV ( Our Base airport ) just outside Las Vegas. I contacted Mark while in Flt an informed him of our dilemma! He suggested I put tape on it and stop drill it............ there were a few private airports on our flt path none with any services......... since I had already replaced the windshield I knew it should stay for the most part intact and be able to make it back to BVU. It was a risk, but chose to continue to our home airport....... we landed with out incidence Thank you God! Yes I was sweating over an hour to our home airport. Any way just sharing our in flt experiences we you guys.... when you click on the pictures you will need to zoom in on some of them, but I assure you that each picture does contain a crack 7 seven in all........

Wow Ray! Thanks goodness that windshield held! I’m very curious to hear how Tecnam responds to this latest event. Do you think it’s related more to a windscreen material defect or to stresses placed on it by the installation/design?

Ray,
After seeing your pictures, I agree that the cracks seem to be from stress. I think blaming everyone's cracks on the manufacturer would be too coincidental so it may be time to start considering that the airframe around the windshield is flexing and causing the stress. Does that sound reasonable?
I have no engineering expertise but I'd bet our fuselages flex more than if they'd been made of riveted aluminum. It seems simple enough: find the cause and then find a fix that addresses the cause. And as someone has already stated, the windshield is probably too thin. If the thickness was increased, just how much weight would it add? 3, 5, or as much as 10 pounds? BWTHDIK.

As I've noted on the forum, I took my Astore to Wells Aviation to have the windshield replaced. Mine was not the first that they replaced. They definitely feel it was thermal stress. Having said that, with all of these broken windshields, you know that there's some kind of basic problem. How many times did you have your windshield break in your Cessna or Piper? - none for me in 58 years nor have I heard of it happening with anybody else during all that time. As you note, Glenn, the problem is likely either with the windshield or the airframe around the windshield. Normally, since this problem is both unusual and repetitive (and potentially dangerous), the factory would determine the cause and deal with it. However, as we've seen, this factory is almost completely unresponsive to their customers (or maybe just their LSA customers vs. the larger singles and twins) and this is just one more area where their support is dismal and it's costing all of us a ton of money, not to mention the risk. Do you think Van's or Bristell would not have been all over a fix had this happened to even one of their airplanes?
BTW, when mine broke, my local mechanic also recommended that we superglue the windshield crack in addition to stop drilling and taping. He taped the inside, applied the glue, let it dry and then applied the tape to the outside. This will keep things much more rigid.

How timely. I'm just opening my e-mails this morning and guess what's there - an LOA for the fuel transducers! I've asked Josh if other Astore owners can use it and if not, what process they need to go through. I've also asked him if P2008 owners can use it and if not, what they need to do. Either way, the fact that we now have an LOA in hand should make the process one heck of a lot different. I'm going to post something about the windshield separately.
