Tecnam Service Bulletin N42-LSA:
Today when I was changing the pitch on my P2008 from a 3 to a 4. I noticed some paint peeling along where the spinner backing plate meets the spacer. When I took a closer look and found cracks all around the backing plate. When I did the 50 hr inspection in July there were no cracks. Please take the time and inspect your spinner. I am not sure what would happen if a spinner would break off inflight but I know it would not be good. Aaron has ordered me a new one.
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for the heads up - have asked my A&P to look for them when he does my pitch, probably next week...

Thanks for the post Jim. Did the cracks impact your plane's airworthiness? I'll be inspecting mine today. One more question Jim. Do you have to remove the spinner to see the cracks or were they visible without removing it?

For me it is a grounding defect. The cracks are 3/4 around the spacer. I could take the spinner at the edge and flex the backing plate.
You do not need to remove the spinner and upper cowl but I suggest that you do. With the spinner and upper cowl off you can do a good close up inspection. The cracks lines are thin and can be difficult to see. Flaking paint is a clue.
The replacement spinner plate takes some work to prepare for installation. You have to drill the holes for the rivnuts, set the rivnuts and then paint. Aaron was able to locate a spinner Assy with all of the work done. UPS has it now and I will have it tomorrow. 2X the money but less chance of me screwing it up.

A few questions 1. Serial number of your plane and hours? 2. What do you think... Design flaw, installation flaw, other? 3. What does Tecnam say. Are they covering the repair?

Tecnam has been aware of the issue since they issued a SB last July. I am not sure of the cause. I am covering the repairs.

My backing plate cracked at about 225 hrs. They crack because there is no support forward of the hub. Sensenich has a carbon fiber spinner and backing plate but I think it's smaller in diameter than Tecnam's. Serial #085 Ed

Sorry Jim but, I don't think the backing plate you have coming will work. The holes probably won't line up. Ed

Jim, I just reread your post and it sounds like you're getting a spinner and backing plate. They are a matched set and should work fine. Ed

Ok I will look for the SB and see what it says. I hope there has been a redesign.

I inspected mine as well during a prop pitch exercise about 10 days ago, with my A&P and we didn't see anything. Just over 100 TT on the Astore.

Just finished my 300 hour inspection today. The only squawk was a crack in the spinner backing plate. The crack appears to only be in the paint at this point. Either way, we're ordering a new plate tomorrow. Apparently there is an upgraded replacement available.
