Hey y'all, Have any of y'all adjusted the nose gear strut and added nitrogen to the oleo strut? When two adults are sitting in the aircraft the nose gear seems a wee bit low. Attachments:

It's critical to keep the pressure up. The spec is 290psi. I keep mine at 320psi. i weigh 180 lbs and when I pulled down on the prop I could completely compress the strut. When the strut is that low the castor angle on the nose wheel is such that a severe shimmy can occur. After I increased the pressure the shimmy problem was gone and I can only compress the strut part way. Most olio struts do loose pressure over time. Most aircraft maintenance shops can fill the strut. Let me know if I can be of more help. Ed

My nose wheel shudders pretty strongly on landing. Even when I do a gentle soft field landing, it still shudders badly. I can't tell if it's a compression issue, or a nose wheel that's not snug enough.
It has gotten worse over the last week. I had air put in the nose wheel yesterday, as I thought low tire pressure was the issue. But that had no effect.

If it's the nose strut it won't shimmy until you apply the brakes. If the plane is near or over gross it is more likely to do it. Ed

One other thing. The plane is much easier to turn from a dead stop with the strut at max psi. With a low strut the plane will dip its nose and not want to turn when you apply a brake to steer. Ed

Awesome, thanks so much for the information Ed! It's very helpful. We will have a mechanic check and see where the PSI level is at. Did you happen to get my private message?

I checked the nosewhell resistance today, and it definitely was within specifications. When I have more time this week I'm going to go back to the hangar and check for out of round.

Mine did exactly what you are describing for over a year, with the stock wheels/brakes. I tried everything, including balancing. No luck. Then I got Beringer. Problem gone.

Thanks geo. Did yours shudder only when braking? Mine is only the nose wheel, but it starts as soon as the nose wheel touches down.

Greg, it sounds like the preload on your nose gear steering shaft is weak. It can be adjusted by removing the nose gear fairing and tightening the big nut on the bottom of the shaft. I had a simlar shudder on my P2008. Adjusting the preload fixed the problem.

Hi Stroudj,
Have you considered replacing your wheels an brakes with Beringer, wheels, brakes? I had the same exact problem severe nose wheel shimmy an brake chatter..... to the point where I thought I may shake the airplane apart! Not kidding really that bad......... I contacted Mark Gregor, he set me up with the compete kit........ after the Beringer's were installed life has truly been amazing! Just giving you my two cents worth. I posted in detail earlier this year all about it I really think this is your answer.......

If so, I've checked that, and I'm definitely getting 11-12 lbs resistance.

(11.02-13.23 lbs) I'd try tightening the friction nut to the max spec before I started replacing wheels.
