Glenn,
The source of the shimmy or more correctly out of balance usually starts with the factory new tire itself being somewhat out of balance. Some are worse than others. It seems if you balance the factory wheel and tire it will help for a short time but the problem seems to return fairly quickly.
I believe there are two causes, one we are forced to use a lightweight tire from the factory for the obvious LSA weight rule. These are not usually the highest quality tires on the market. Second these tires seem to slip on the wheel further increasing the out of balance problem. Keeping the tires near the maximum PSI range seems to help. I have seen several owners that had problems soon after delivery and some have gotten up to 200 hours without complaint. Owners seem to have differing tolerances to the shimmy. I have flown customer planes where I was quite surprised the owner was flying in this condition. Many of them are used to rental planes and just accept it as normal. I admit my tolerance to imperfection is higher than average but many of our owners are similar to myself and that is why we spend the extra for a Tecnam!
Hope this helps!
Mark

One thing I don't think I answered clearly.
Yes the problem will likely get progressively worse until you are forced to do something. The best and most expensive solution being the Beringers. Balancing the standard wheels and installing new higher quality tires is also a solution but you will still have tube tires that are more susceptible to flats. They won't have the silky feel and wow look of the Beringers though. The tire slipping on the wheel may still be a problem with Matcos.
Also some have said they can purchase the Beringer wheel kit on Spruce for less money. This is not true. The kit they are selling is generic and missing several Tecnam specific parts.
Feel free to give me a call if you want more info.

Mark,
Thanks, all good information. I'll be on the lookout for early symptoms as I approach 200 hours. So far I have none.
With all the P92s and P2008s being operated in Europe, my guess is they probably have the same issues. Do you have any information on that and how they are dealing with it? Tecnam builds such a high quality plane and since a Beringer cure is well known, I'm very surprised they haven't addressed this with Beringers or something else.
Have you weighed all the parts in the conversion? How much weight is added in the conversion to Beringer wheels, brakes, and high quality tires?

Has anyone (non-Beringer owners ) experienced sticky brakes? Seems like every time I make a right-hand turn followed by a left hand turn it takes full pressure on the left brake and almost full power to keeping moving forward. If I don't apply full power the plane will ultimately come to a complete stop. With no left braking the plane will pull right. Seems like the right brake is sticking. Thoughts? Just got back home from finishing my 200 hour. The right side brake pads were worn down to the nubs. Pads replaced. Problem solved. (PS - 51% of all turns are right-hand turns - (Seinfeld fans unite!))

I'm not really have any problems with the Matco's. it's just that the quality of the Berringer's is so obvious. Ed

My P2008 Serial Number is 106 and the factory brakes are Matco. I just had my 100 hour/Annual inspection. The Tecnam approved shop said they liked the Matco brakes. But then I got this information from a SLSA mechanic:
Sometime in late 2015 to 2016 Tecnam changer over to MATCO wheels and brakes. You can tell on your aircraft by looking at the inside of the wheel where the brake caliper is and it will say MATCO on the brake caliper. The MATCO wheels and brakes are a great improvement over the previous mfg, how ever Tecnam elected to go with a ball bearing vs the cone type bearing. So if you have the MATCOs next time you takeoff remove your headset and listen for bearing noise (ZZZZZZZ) as speed increases. Slowly apply left or right brake after lift off to determine side (If its really bad it will stop right after takeoff). If you have bearing noise the bearing is probably going to fail soon, so jack the aircraft up and spin it by hand to check it. In my opinion its not a matter of if, its a matter of when. As the bearing seal goes out and you taxi in rain or a puddle then the bearing sits and rust.
One more thing to keep on your radar?

John,
Sounds like some of us will need a part number for the cone bearings sooner or later. I have the Matco brakes too.

Tecnam just issued NCA #48 about Matco wheels and bearings: the correct procedure for tightening the axle nut for ball bearings.

I assume the above post is from Gary. I'm not quite sure how it got my my name on it as the poster??? Mark Mark, This was caused by what I consider a "flaw" in this website. I noticed if I'm not signed in when I start a post that a box appears for me to enter a "GUEST NAME." I can put in any name as a guest making a post. A Guest should have no choice. All posts by a guest should show up as GUEST.Notice that my guest name for this post is "Santa Clause." Try it for yourself. The moderator needs to fix this...ASAP.Guess Who

One solution might be not allowing guests to make posts. That seems to be very common practice at least in the forums I've found.

Excellent!! Thanks for taking care of this for all of us. And thanks for getting TecnamTalk up and running over the last year.
